Want to Boost Productivity in 2015? Strive to Make Employees Happier

Happy employees are the key to organizational success in 2015.  When employees aren’t satisfied, productivity slows, sick days increase, and morale takes a turn for the worse. In fact, a survey by Gallup showed that unhappy employees cost employers an average of $300 billion dollars a year due to decreased productivity.  A loss of productivity also reduces overall drive to succeed.

So what can you do to make your employees happier, healthier, and more productive this year?  Here are four tips recommended by top leaders in the industry.

Be Passionate.

Employee happiness begins and ends with management.  In fact, most employees leave a workplace because of bad supervisors—not companies.  Especially in today’s workforce, workers need to feel like they’re part of a team, working towards a common goal.  That’s why as a leader in the organization, it’s important to have weekly benchmarks and share your vision and goals.  Show employees how they matter and where they fit into the bigger picture.  Have an open-door policy for communication and be easily approachable.  The most successful companies are lead by transparent leaders who are passionate about not just the success of the organization, but also the success of their staff.

Encourage Collaboration.

One way to make employees happier is by removing the hierarchy mentality from the office.  Encourage your team to work together instead of having them report to a supervisor.  Studies show that more employees are afraid of letting the whole team down than letting their supervisor down.  A team mentality usually results in people staying later, coming in early, and devoting more energy to a project.  Having a team work as equals actually boosts morale and produces better results.

Offer a Flexible Work Environment.

Especially with millennial employees, offering a flexible work environment is a great incentive to increase happiness.  Allow them to set their own (reasonable) hours, as long as they prove they can get the work done.  Provide communal workspaces within the office that capture the casual coffee shop environment.  Well-placed couches and comfy chairs provide a change of scene and encourage interaction among colleagues.

Show Your Appreciation.

A little appreciation goes a long way in keeping employees happy.  Take a few moments each day to walk through the office and observe the hard work your staff is doing.  Stop and thank individuals by name that are doing an exceptional job and tell them how much you appreciate their effort.  A little recognition does wonders in boosting productivity.  Sometimes a bit of reassurance is all that’s needed to motivate employees.
