Non-Clinical Skills That Can Boost Your Nursing Career

You’re hoping to move up the ranks at your healthcare facility, and you’ve worked hard to master your medical skills. So, what’s the next step? Here are 3 non-clinical skills that can boost your nursing career.

Non-Clinical Skills That Help Nurses Advance

Leadership

When you think of leadership and nursing, supervisory positions like a nurse manager may come to mind. Yet, as organizational consult, Simon Sinek points out, “truly effective and inspiring leaders aren’t actually driven to lead people; they are driven to serve them.” Therefore, instead of looking for ways to take charge, search for ways to support your team. This may include assisting someone with a difficult patient, offering to train a new hire, or covering an extra shift. These types of actions will make YOU someone your team relies on and admires. Additionally, consider more formal leadership training too. For example, you could take classes or volunteer for leadership roles such as mentorship opportunities.

Willingness to Learn

To boost your nursing career, you must be at the top of your field and at the top of your game. A willingness to learn covers both areas. First, you’ll want to keep up to date on all the most recent medical advancements. This may involve taking classes, reading medical publications, and participating in professional development opportunities. Second, you’ll need to work toward perfecting your soft skills. For example, improving your communication skills allows you to provide better patient care and to build more meaningful relationships with your colleagues.

A Positive Attitude

Healthcare is a challenging and demanding field. However, nurses who can see past the daily inconveniences and focus on the greater good bring meaning and passion to the job. For example, a run-in with one angry patient shouldn’t ruin your day when you helped 20 other people. Plus, studies suggest, happy people are more likely to receive promotions. Of course, you don’t have to be upbeat 100% of the time. Everyone has a bad day now and again. Nevertheless, DO try to develop a more positive outlook by reframing thoughts, keeping a gratitude journal and lending a hand. That’s right, serving others not only makes you a more effective leader but also increases happiness.
