Ways to Make the Holidays Stress-Free for Your Patients

With the holidays coming, many healthcare workers must help their patients cope with the stress and anxiety that often comes along with this time of year. There’s no denying the holidays can be stressful for everyone; however, they are especially challenging for individuals who are sick with serious illnesses or medical conditions. As a nursing professional, here are some ways in which you can ease your patients’ stress during the holiday season:

Offer welcome distractions.

Sometimes the best way to help patients cope with stressful times is to offer them some productive distractions. For example, playing holiday music or a fun game can take their mind off things that may be causing them extreme angst or distress. Engaging and interacting with patients in different ways can be beneficial for their mental health while getting them in the holiday spirit.

Show empathy.

If your patients are dealing with serious or life-threatening medical issues, expressing empathy is one of the best ways to keep their stress levels down. Being empathetic to your patients’ physical and emotional challenges will allow you to develop better connections with them, especially during the holidays when tensions are often high. Empathizing with their fears or concerns will likely have a calming effect on them, giving them a safe space to share their thoughts and feelings.

Engage in active listening.

Your ability to actively listen to your patients can significantly impact their happiness and enjoyment. Listening carefully to your patients’ concerns, feelings, and emotions will show them they’re being heard and taken seriously. Giving your patients an outlet to freely express themselves without judgment can significantly reduce feelings of anxiety, loneliness, and depression.
