Are Black Friday Injuries a Growing Trend?

Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. As consumers head out to find the best deals, sometimes in the earliest hours of the day or even on Thanksgiving evening, there’s bound to be some accidents. All of the chaos of Black Friday means one thing: someone, somewhere, is bound to get hurt. So, are Black Friday injuries on the rise? And what does this all mean for nurses?

Are Black Friday Injuries on the Rise?

It would certainly seem that injuries resulting from the chaos of Black Friday are on the rise. Every year, we see news stories of trampling incidents, fights, and other violent occurrences tied directly to America’s prime shopping holiday. While it’s hard to come by hard data-driven numbers on the subject, it’s safe to say that Black Friday is crazier now than it ever has been. So, more people are going to suffer injuries as a result.

What Kind of Injuries Are Likely to Be Seen?

For the most part, the injuries that nurses are likely to see on Black Friday aren’t serious ones. Bumps and bruises, small cuts, and twisted ankles will probably make up the majority of it. But that doesn’t mean that serious injuries are impossible. According to reviews.org, trampling makes up the largest chunk of Black Friday injuries at 30%. That’s followed closely by shootings at 26.7%, and then car-related injuries at 16.7%. While it’s not exactly likely that you’ll be treating a gunshot victim who was shot as a direct result of an angry Black Friday shopper, it’s entirely possible that you’ll be treating some serious injuries this holiday!

What Does it Mean for Nurses?

All of this means that healthcare facilities, in general, should have a sufficient staff rotation on and around Black Friday and the Thanksgiving holiday, if not extra staff to provide support. Nurses should expect to work extra hours around this time, and not just in the day — since Black Friday deals start earlier than ever, sometimes days beforehand, injuries are just as likely to occur at night.
