The Importance of Finding the Right Medical Unit for You

Interviewing for a new job in the healthcare industry can be a big challenge.

While you may be eager to take the first job you’re offered, it’s important to make sure to find the best medical unit for you.  The “evaluation” process of the interview should always be a two-way street.  While your potential employers and colleagues are assessing you, you should be assessing them.  If you can’t see yourself being around them for more than 48 hours, you already know the job isn’t going to work out in the long run.

Before you go to the big interview, evaluate your workplace priorities.  What’s most important to you in the workplace?  What kind of colleagues do you want to be around?  In most of today’s interviews in the healthcare industry, you’re given a chance to peer interview or job shadow.  Having a list of questions prepared for your potential colleagues will help you determine whether you’d like to work in their unit.

Kati Kleber, Editorial Director of #ProtectNurses, suggests asking the below questions:

  1. Do you have to float units? How often?
  2. What do you think of the charting system you use?
  3. Tell me about the doctors you work with.
  4. Do you typically clock out on time? If not, why?
  5. How long do people usually work on this unit?
  6. How many nationally certified nurses are on this unit?
  7. Do you have a clinical ladder and do people actually go through it?

While your peers likely won’t give you all the dirt (they do want to keep their job after all), they’ll often be more candid with you than the hiring managers you’re interviewing with.  Therefore, it’s important to have authentic questions to ask when you’re given the opportunity.  You’ll be able to tell from their answers the pros and cons of the medical unit and whether it’d be a good fit for you.
